Reds Win Their 3rd In A Row Behind Volquez

The Cincinnati Reds won their third game in a row on the current road trip by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park 8-2. The Reds lost the first two games of this road trip to the Central Division leading Chicago Cubs. They picked up a 12-7 win in the getaway game on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field scoring 12 runs and hitting 7 TATERS. Then they moved on to play the 2nd place Brewers and after a tight 6-5 win Friday night came out fast with an early lead on Saturday night thanks to a 3-run homer by Adam Dunn in the first inning. Dunn added a second homerun in the ninth inning, a solo shot, and that was followed by another homer from the next batter, Edwin Encarnacion. That was the third baseman's 15th longball of the season while Dunn leads the Reds with 26 homers. Offense wasn't the only story on this night, as 25 year old starting pitcher Edinson Volquez gave up only one earned run and struck out 10. Volquez picked up his 12th win of the season against 3 losses--the 1st Reds pitcher to win 12 games before the All-Star break since Don Gullett. Volquez has a league leading ERA of 2.29 and this was his 14th quality start of the season. He trails only Brandon Webb in the National League in victories and is tied with Tim Lincecum in strikeouts. Volquez will probably get the start for the National League in the All-Star game as Webb and Lincecum will both be starting for their respective teams on Sunday. Reds leadoff hitter Jerry Hairston Jr. continues to set the table, as he went 4 for 4 with a walk, on the evening.
